Related Activities A separate Development Section within the University Language Centre (also part of the School of Languages , Linguistics and Cultures) provides Japanese translation services and provides an English work experience programme that attracts Japanese University groups throughout the year. The students on exchange from Japan are encouraged to meet and interact with students on Japanese Studies programmes. Future Developments The Partnership of Universities that supported the former Japan Centre dissolved in 2006 and the University of Manchester has now absorbed the Japan Centre staff and resources into the School of Languages , Linguistics and Cultures and made major investments in developing Japanese Studies. The University of Manchester is proceeding with the development of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Japanese Studies with a first intake in September 2007. Japanese Studies joins Chinese Studies in a new discipline area of East Asian Studies within the School which also includes English Language and Linguistics, French Studies, German Studies, Italian Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin-American Studies, Russian Studies, Translation Studies and Screen Studies. There are plans to expand the undergraduate provision in Japanese Studies and develop postgraduate courses in addition to the current research degrees (M.Phil and PhD) which are offered. |
