In 2003, the increasingly successful BA in Chinese/Japanese and Cultural Studies was introduced. This programme (known as TT41) offers a refreshing alternative to traditional East Asian Studies packages by combining communicative language study with a range of social science options to produce versatile, highly employable graduates. The degree is both interdisciplinary thanks to its area studies focus, and multidisciplinary since all the non-language modules are rooted within disciplinary programmes such as Sociology, Politics, History, Geography or Music. As such, the degree is innovative on a national scale. It has led to successful team-teaching initiatives across eight disciplines in various Schools within the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. The programme has successfully attracted students, especially in the last two years. Following this success in undergraduate recruitment, there have been several positive moves towards developing Japanese studies at Newcastle within the framework of the BA in Chinese/Japanese and Cultural Studies (TT41). New modules in Japanese studies were developed in Politics and Film Studies, while in 2005 an RCUK academic fellow with Japan connections joined the School of Natural Sciences. At time of writing, the School of Modern Languages is in the process of interviewing for a full-time permanent Lecturer in Japanese, who will teach Japanese socio-cultural studies in addition to Japanese language, and who will be research-active.
